Office of Physical Sciences - Oncology (OPSO) OPSO Homepage

Director: Larry A. Nagahara, Ph.D.

Since cancer occurs in three-dimensional space over time and is subject to the physical laws which govern the universe, OPSO is bringing together unprecedented teams of experts from the physical and biological sciences to study cancer at a fundamental level. Recently the NCI planned and established a network of 12 Physical Sciences-Oncology Centers (PS-OCs) designed to:

  • Establish novel collaborations representing physics, mathematics, chemistry, and engineering to stimulate new insights that could be transformative.
  • Explore laws of physics that govern how cancer develops and changes across length scales (molecular level to organism).
  • Examine energy and energy flows, cellular shape and mechanics, tumor cell evolution, and the physics of metastasis.
