Analytical Technologies to Objectively Measure Human Performance (ATOM-HP)

ATOM-HP is an NCI/DoD collaborative research pilot run by investigators at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine. The goal of the program is to improve the lives of cancer patients and military personnel through the development of a platform to objectively monitor fatigue.

Cancer patients and military personnel alike suffer from fatigue induced by stressors like treatment and rigorous military training activities. The ATOM-HP study monitored physical responses in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and active-duty military personnel participating in a combat fitness test. For each cohort, wearable activity monitors collected data on step-count, calories burned, and heart rate. Gait was also assessed using motion monitors. Data are still being analyzed for this study, but initial observations from the cancer cohort suggest that these objective measures may help identify a subset of patients most at risk of unexpected medical interventions.
